To help celebrate the romance of Valentine's Day, The Jazz Club presents vocalist Shannon Forsell, reunited with band members from her 2010 recording project The Nearness of You: A Tribute to Hoagy Carmichael.

Listen to an excerpt of Shannon Forsell
singing

Hoagy Carmichael's "Can't Get Indiana Off My Mind"

from her CD The Nearness of You: A Tribute to Hoagy Carmichael

Listen to Shannon sing with the Cool City Swing Band:

All the Way

Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me

Don't Know Why

Let the Good Times Roll

I Love Being Here With You

Shannon Forsell’s vocals capture the essence of the songs of one of America’s finest composers and quintessential Hoosier, Hoagy Carmichael. With the perfect blend of sophistication and authenticity, Forsell keenly interprets Hoagy’s most well known songs (The Nearness of You, Skylark, Stardust, Georgia On My Mind) along with a few less-recorded musical gems.

Forsell’s lush vocals and superb lyric interpretation, backed by critically acclaimed jazz musicians, make this top-notch recording a sure bet for jazz and cabaret lovers alike. The Nearness of You is a pleasure, a cool trip through a wonderful chapter in the great American songbook.

REVIEWS

“Forsell is out in front and justifies the position with her rich, beautiful voice. Backed by a tight band, including pianist Zach Lapidus and arranger Rob Dixon(sax), Shannon recreates the magic of Hoagy in a delightful way.”

“…a celebratory testament to this remarkable songsmith. Just listen to any of the songs on this rewarding cd and you’ll agree.  ‘Stardust receives a treatment like no other before.  Shannon goes deep—way, way deep into this most familiar song. Her mellow musical shadings surround each word…a shining cd.

- In Tune International

(Forsell) is somewhat of a chameleon, and the arrangements, by sax player Bob Dixon, have different characters. She sounds like a dyed-in-the-wool blithe big-band vocalist right out of the gate, gets dark and dusky later, doing a very coolly knowing and sophisticatedly hip "Baltimore Oriole," and goes a ways toward being romantically inclined on the famous title song. It is always impressive when a singer can sound involved and fresh in a warhorse...it's worth a listen to catch some of the many sides this lady brings out in Hoagy.
